Torn between hiring a green pea with no experience and a veteran from another store who may be stuck in their (not-so-great) ways?
You’re not alone! And we have the answers to the test!
Here are 3 hiring tips to consider for your next round of interviews:
Tip #1: Enthusiasm is contagious
There’s something to be said about the bright-eyed and bushy-tailed new hire. Once they’re bought in and they start to feel themselves a little bit, they give off a glow that only someone new to the game can offer. That breath of fresh air to the dealership will rub off on others!
Tip 2#: Experience doesn’t always equal quality
Just because someone’s been “doing something” for a while, doesn’t mean they’ve been doing it well! Most dealerships opt to go with the veteran over the person with no experience because it’s the path of least resistance (or at least seems that way). Give it a few months and wait to see how much resistance the veteran stuck in their ways starts to create!
Tip 3#: The training starts even before the interview
When I hire salespeople, I begin coaching and training them before they even show up for the interview! I want them to show up to their interview enthused, motivated and ready to learn what my team has to offer! From the first interaction I set the tone for what I expect out of them by showing them what I expect out of myself! If your dealership doesn’t have an effective onboarding strategy, it’s definitely hurting your ability to attract top tier talent!
As I’m sure you’ve figured out, I’m a firm believer in home grown talent! I mean after all, what’s easier to mold, clay or a rock? Just ask NFL General Managers (or any sports exec for that matter) what’s the more effective way to build a dynasty : Signing high priced ego filled Free Agents or building through the draft?
